The Significance and Symbolism of Blue Orchids

Orchids are one of the most popular house plants in the United States because they are stunningly beautiful and because they are easy to care for. Interestingly, orchids are one of the two largest families of flowering plants and account for 6-11% of all seed plants. They take approximately 5-7 years to bloom once they are germinated, so the orchid plants that are sold are already decades old! When cared for properly in the home, they will grow easily and re-bloom several times a year. Orchids can live up to 100 years if taken care of correctly. They need bright, indirect light, air circulation, and infrequent waterings. Orchids come in many different colors, each with their own unique characteristics and meanings, which make them a perfect gift.

Real Blue Orchids

Orchids can come in many different colors, both through natural pollination as well as unnatural dyes. There are only a few naturally blue orchids: the primary blue orchid is called Vanda orchids. Vanda orchids are almost blue but are actually blueish-purple. They are very rare and are native in India. Real blue orchids have also been seen in other Asian countries, such as Nepal, China, Northern Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

Vanda coerulea (blue orchids) have large, flat, blue flowers. This unique orchid can also bloom in either pink or white. The flowers of Vanda coerulea grow up to 13 centimeters. In their natural habitat, blue orchids grow high above the ground on rough-barked trees, such as oak. They can have up to 20 to 30 flowers per plant, which, interestingly, are much more than other similar orchid species.

Typically, if you see a blue orchid, a blue food dye has been injected into the orchid’s stem. Nevertheless, blue orchids are visually arresting and make a wonderfully special gift to someone–or to yourself!

Symbolism Of Blue Orchids

Generally, orchids are symbols of love. They can be given as individual plants or as bouquets. More specifically, blue orchids are exotic and rare, so they are a symbol of uniqueness and individuality. They can also signify wealth, hope, and peace. If you give a blue orchid as a gift to someone, you could be conveying that they are one of a kind and they are as rare and stunning as the orchid they are receiving.

Throughout history, blue orchids have been important symbols. The Victorians believed that owning a blue orchid meant that the owner stood out from a crowd. Furthermore, due to their rarity, blue orchids designated their owners as wealthy and extravagant during this time in history. In Japanese culture, they believed that blue orchids should only be given to royals. Some believe that seeing blue orchids in dreams is a lesson to stay true to your individuality. A bold, blue orchid can symbolize emotional and spiritual strength.

When you give a blue orchid to someone, it conveys the message that you believe they are strong and independent. The powerful, yet subtle, blue color of these orchids suggests a natural sense of self. If you want to make a strong statement to a loved one, blue orchid plants or bouquets will certainly make an impact due to their striking colors and rarity.

Rare yet easy to grow, blue orchids are meaningful gifts–whether to a special someone as a just because gift or just to yourself because you earned it. Orchids require light and once-a-week watering, making them a low-maintenance, yet stunning, showpiece in a room. Make a statement by gifting a blue orchid to celebrate someone’s individuality, beauty, and resilience.
